Living better with bladder weakness

June 18, 2019 Intermed

Incontinence is the permanent or occasional involuntary and uncontrolled loss of urine, even of small volume (urinary weakness). In France, nearly 3 million people are affected by this problem, which has a major impact on daily life.

Incontinence comes in many forms and there are many ways to combat it:

Stress incontinence

For new mothers, pelvic floor exercises during and after pregnancy are essential to reduce the risk of urinary incontinence. However, these exercises should be continued for at least 3 months after delivery. If you suffer from chronic constipation, make sure you eat a diet rich in fiber, contained in wholegrain cereals, fruit and vegetables. Drink at least one and a half liters of liquid a day, giving preference to water and herbal teas. If you're overweight, try to lose a few kilos by moving around a lot and eating less fat and sweets.

Bladder instability incontinence

Cigarette smoke irritates the bladder, coffee and tea cause the kidneys to produce more urine, which increases bladder instability, as do wine, beer and spirits.

Overflow incontinence

Drink enough water as soon as you wake up and limit consumption of drinks such as coffee, tea and alcohol, which irritate the bladder. Get help to stop smoking and take regular exercise.

Reflex incontinence

As with other forms of incontinence, you need to adopt simple lifestyle rules to maintain urinary balance and combat incontinence-related problems.

Stay sufficiently hydrated and avoid bladder-irritating foods such as alcohol, certain artificial sweeteners, chocolate and citrus fruits. Chronic constipation also requires a diet rich in fiber, which increases the volume of the faecal bolus. In addition, constipating drugs such as certain antidepressants, laxatives, antacids and iron preparations should be used with caution.

In a nutshell:

  • Eat a diet rich in fibre and antioxidants
  • Drink at least a liter and a half of liquid a day, giving preference to water and herbal teas.
  • Eat less fat and sweets
  • Drink wine, beer, coffee and tea in moderation
  • Quitting smoking
